Digi-feminist/DaMaris Hill

At the 2011 KU Digital Humanities Forum, I presented a new pedagogical model and termed it as ‘digi-feminist’ pedagogical practice.  Digi-feminist pedagogical practice is a style of pedagogy that privileges the feminist teaching practices introduced by bell hooks in her book Teaching to Transgress and digital tools that aid in instruction. This teaching practice values democracy and aligns student-centered pedagogy with feminist instructional theory and digital technology.

Digi-feminist practices help to foster democracy in contemporary classroom settings. Cultivating a community that values democracy and personal responsibility within the learning environment is essential in order to prepare students to engage in critical conversations pertaining to creative writing, literature, and cultural studies.  A student-centered style of pedagogy rooted in personal experiences with an emphasis on democracy are key.
