Digi-feminist/DaMaris Hill

At the 2011 KU Digital Humanities Forum, I presented a new pedagogical model and termed it as ‘digi-feminist’ pedagogical practice.  Digi-feminist pedagogical practice is a style of pedagogy that privileges the feminist teaching practices introduced by bell hooks in her book Teaching to Transgress and digital tools that aid in instruction. This teaching practice values democracy and aligns student-centered pedagogy with feminist instructional theory and digital technology.

Digi-feminist practices help to foster democracy in contemporary classroom settings. Cultivating a community that values democracy and personal responsibility within the learning environment is essential in order to prepare students to engage in critical conversations pertaining to creative writing, literature, and cultural studies.  A student-centered style of pedagogy rooted in personal experiences with an emphasis on democracy are key.

modified from - https://www.facinghistory.org/resource-library/teaching-strategies/k-w-l-charts

K-W-L Charts
Rationale
K-W-L charts are graphic organizers that help students organize information before, during, and after a lesson. K-W-L Charts are used to engage in a new topic, activate prior knowledge, share collective understanding, and monitor learning.
     Complete Know
Respond to Know: What do you Know about creative writing in digital spaces?  A master list of all responses will be collected on this blog.

Complete Want to know
Respond to Want to know: What do you Want to know about this creative writing in digital spaces?

Complete Learn (reviewing columns 1 and 2)
At the end of this lesson, we will review the K-W-L charts by adding to the learn portions: What did you Learn today about creative writing in digital spaces?

As we document what we have learned, we will review the questions in Want to know, checking off any questions that we can now answer. We can also add new questions and answers. We should also review the Know portions so we can identify any misconceptions we may have held prior to our lesson.

Portrait of An Artist as a Young [Wo]Man

Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce

Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man is a closely autobiographical novel that is closely aligned with Joyce’s experiences as a young man.

It is also a type of satirical rendering.  Satire in the form of jest and irony is one of your generations strongest expressive talents.

Today, we are going to compose portraits of ourselves. Do not feel obligated to construct satirical self-portraits.
